Vampyr Magazine
Vampyr is a new film magazine edited and published by Vampyr Press, a publisher affiliated with Super8warehouse. The first issue, released last fall, focuses entirely on films on 8mm.
Films on 8mm
The idea of screening movies at home has fascinated film lovers and collectors since the earliest days of cinema. Beginning in the 1920s, a thriving industry emerged, releasing thousands of films for home viewing across a variety of formats. This inaugural issue of Vampyr shines a light on films released on Standard 8mm and Super 8mm, formats that were popular from the mid-1930s through the early 1980s.
The films discussed span a wide range, with special attention to more obscure and overlooked releases. A special 8-page section explores the science fiction and fantasy serials of Republic Pictures, which found a new audience in the home cinema—albeit in heavily abridged form. Another feature uncovers two films made specifically for 8mm distribution, starring Diana Rigg of The Avengers fame. Other highlights include pieces on the silhouette animations of pioneer Lotte Reiniger, D.W. Griffith’s A Corner in Wheat, a handful of early kung fu releases, Ed Wood’s Plan 9 from Outer Space—celebrated as “the worst film ever made”—French disco films, The Mayfair Girls, and much more.
Many articles are illustrated with actual frame blowups from the original 8mm prints, offering a rare, close-up look at this almost forgotten corner of film history. Some material first appeared, in shorter form, in the Vampyr column written by Bert Haagsman for Schokkend Nieuws magazine (2002–2015).
Vampyr: Traces of Cinema
Since the invention of film, cinema has left its traces everywhere. Millions of publicity photos, reviews, and star profiles filled newspapers and magazines. Posters and billboards lined the streets, often near the grand theatres built by distributors in major cities. Novelists found inspiration in Hollywood’s triumphs and tragedies. Comic book artists borrowed their heroes and monsters from the movies. These—and many other echoes of cinema—are what Vampyr sets out to explore.
